Troop 33 responded early to the Hurricane Katrina disaster with a benefit breakfast on September 10. Three breakfasts later, coupled with other presentations, they raised over $8,000 for relief efforts. Their Scouts wanted to do something more personal than just raise money, so they planned a mission trip over Christmas vacation to work "hands on" with disaster relief in Mississippi and Louisiana. Twenty Scouts and nine adults made the 1,000-mile trip from DeKalb, Illinois, bringing with them 6,000 pounds of food, blankets, clothing, Christmas toys, Bibles, and other supplies. While in the hurricane-affected areas, they helped prepare over 5,000 meals at God's Katrina Kitchen, prepared a banquet for 300 military family members at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, and helped establish a new animal shelter in New Orleans. Troop 33 also donated funds to help Troop 316 in Pass Christian, Mississippi, which lost all its equipment after the hurricane.

Troop 316 in Pass Christian
Boy Scout Troop 650 of Alta Loma, California, with their Merry Christmassissippi project at Keesler Air Force Base. The other projects Troop 33 did alone.
$8,000 raised for Hurricane Katrina relief. 5,300 meals prepared. Food, blankets, clothing, Christmas toys, Bibles donated. Animal rescue center opened.
The best part of the project was making a positive effort in response to a major disaster. Working to help people. Teamwork and goal setting were also tremendous benefits, helping boys learn to focus toward achieving their goals.
